Resveralife Reports: Consumer Research a Threat to Retailers?

We live in an age of instantaneous information, connection and satisfaction. We get what we want, when we want it. As consumers, it has always been important to be informed when it comes to our purchases. We want to know what we are buying, what benefits the item or service might have, any disadvantages that the item may have and what performance we can expect from the thing we are spending our hard earned money on. Whether it is a silk camisole or a washing machine, we like to be savvy shoppers. But does our increased availability of information and our knowledge of products threaten retailers?

Recently, Google partnered with Ipsos MediaCT and Sterling Brands to see what impact technology has on consumption and shopping habits. Included in this study was the question of whether or not consumer research is damaging to retailers. The common belief among brick and mortar retailers is that the primary reason we go into stores is simply to conduct a transaction. Retailers assume that we have already completed our research and as such, that we are fully informed about their product. They assume we are there only to pay for our items. However, the research suggests that the retailers who believe all we want is a sales transaction are doing damage to themselves.

The data gathered by Google, Ipsos MediaCT and Sterling Brands, suggests that as consumers, we expect more than ever from our retailers. We still visit stores, and online shops, to compare and to stimulate interest in items. The research suggests that while we are more informed than ever, we still look to retailers to be an authority on their products and to provide use with a shopping experience. Google, Ipsos MediaCT and Sterling Brands found that just because we perform searches and gather information does not mean that we are turning our backs on retailers. We simply want more out of them. We visit our favorite stores not only because we like the merchandise that is sold there, but also because we enjoy and savor the shopping experience in these stores.

Retailers would do well to take heed of this information. The majority of us visit stores to get an idea of what we want to buy prior to conducting research. Once we have seen the item, then we go into detective mode and try to learn as much as possible about what we intend to buy. Our research doesn’t necessarily hurt retailers, though it does affect what we want from them. Because we can pull together so much information on a product, we expect our retailers to be able to still tell us more. Why buy something when the retailer seems less knowledgeable about the product than we are? We expect retailers to be experts in their products and services. We also anticipate that retailers will provide us with a personalized shopping experience.

Being an informed consumer is important, and some of the burden certainly does rest on us. However, retailers also need to remember that customers want more than just information and details on products. We want to feel valued and important. When it comes to shopping we want more than product specifications, we want to have an enitre experience when it comes to shopping.

Shopping and looking at herself in the mirror

Resveralife Live Well: Shopping and Self-Esteem

We have all heard of people indulging in a little “retail therapy.” This common maxim is used to describe shopping as a means of increasing our current moods or ridding ourselves of some stress. As it turns out, the idea of shopping being related to our psychology and self-esteem is not quite as far-fetched as we may have originally thought. As a culture we practice what is known sociologically as conspicuous consumption. Essentially, conspicuous consumption is spending money on goods that are intended to demonstrate our social status. Often, conspicuous consumption refers to the purchase of expensive or luxury items, which are recognized as prestigious status symbols. Studies conducted recently indicate that “retail therapy” is not just a term thrown around when we want to feel better about ourselves by buying. In fact, it seems that our spending habits, particularly of luxury items, are directly related to our self-esteem.

Researchers Niro Sivanathan, assistant professor at the London Business School, and Nathan Pettit, of Cornell University, conducted clinical studies in a lab that were intended to delve into the psyche of what our spending really says about our self-esteem. The results of these studies confirm that we are far more inclined to spend, especially on higher priced items, when we are experiencing periods of low-self-esteem. Why are we buying particularly when we are feeling down? One of the reasons indicated by the studies suggests that we buy in order to create an impressive exterior sense that we are well off. The second reason truly is retail therapy: we shop when we want to soothe internal pain regarding how we perceive ourselves.

Quite simply, psychological forces impact our decision to shop. We all face a great number of challenges daily, and the blows to our egos can be tough to take. It is in these moments that, according to researchers Sivanathan and Pettit, we desire to increase our conspicuous consumption. Additionally, it is interesting to note that the research conducted also indicated that not only do we spend more, but we do so paying mostly with credit cards when our self-esteem is low. The general hypothesis is that using credit cards as a means to purchase high-end goods helps us decrease any guilt we associate with spending large amounts of money.

When we say we are indulging in retail therapy, it really is a truth. Our self-esteem and attitudes towards ourselves influence our shopping habits. We turn to shopping as a means to alleviate stress and as an attempt to improve our perceptions of who we are. Self-esteem can of course be improved by means other than shopping, and it is advisable to learn other habits of coping with stress and low self-esteem. While shopping definitely does bolster our self-esteem, in the long-run it is not a permanent fix. Grabbing some friends and heading to the mall for a day of retail therapy is totally fine. However, it is important to remember that material possessions do not define who we are as people.

Resveralife on Live Well: How Unhealthy Lifestyles Take a Toll on Your Skin

Woman leading an unhealthy lifestyle

Resveralife  came across a study which showed that living unhealthy lifestyles can lead to skin aging by more than 10 years. The study shows that smoking, lack of moisturization, improper diet and sun beds play a huge role in accelerating the signs of aging. This study was conducted with 585 women from Spain, UK and China by a group of skin care experts and it showed that the factors that influenced the skin were the same, irrespective of the skin type or the background. This study was carried out over the course of 8 years and it focused on women between the ages 25 – 70 in China, 45 – 75 in the UK and 30 – 70 in Spain. Controlled laboratory conditions were established in Shanghai (China), Bedford (UK) and Madrid (Spain). The study proved that lifestyle choices accounted for as much as 33% in terms of how old a woman looks.

The participants of the study were asked a series of questions with regards to their lifestyles, including whether or not they smoked and if they liked tanning. Other questions revolved around their diet, their skin care routine, their brushing habits and whether they have all their teeth. Digital images of each woman were also taken which were later assessed for how old the woman looked in order to identify the perceived age of the woman and whether she looked older than her actual age. The perceived ages were then compared for women with good and bad lifestyles.

The difference that was finally concluded was a staggering 10.4 years. According to Dr. Andrew Mayes, it is common knowledge that genetics are responsible for 50% of how the skin looks, but it wasn’t known that lifestyles played such a huge part in how the skin looked. Dr. Mayes says that even the experts were surprised by the percentage as well as the number of years.

The researchers mention that they couldn’t believe their findings at first, but the evidence was right there in front of them. Women who had a healthy lifestyle simply looked much younger and healthier than women with unhealthy lifestyles. The study goes on to show that skin care isn’t just about slathering skin creams and moisturizers and forgetting about the rest. Proper skin care is actually about how you treat your life and your body and the steps you take to rectify any obvious errors in your ways.

The study also offers promising results for people not wanting to undergo things like invasive cosmetic procedures or plastic surgeries. The effects of proper skin care, a healthy diet and a good lifestyle might be small, but the study shows that steady effects shall certainly be seen over a period of time without having to resort to invasive procedures.

Resveralife  is delighted to have come across this study because it simply reinforces our beliefs and our suggestions. Resveralife  has always maintained that the secrets to unlocking healthy and younger looking skin is to have a proper skin care routine, live a healthy life and enjoy a balanced diet.

Bottle of Chainti with glass of it poured out and grapes

Resveralife Live Well: Health Benefits of Chianti Wine

Authentic Chianti wine is wine that has been produced in the Chianti region of Tuscany, Italy. Chianti wine has a rich and interesting history that dates back to as early as the thirteenth century. The first reference to the Chianti region of wine dates back to 1716 and referred to the area around the villages of Gaiole, Castellina and Radda. Most people associate Chianti wine as a red, though it was not always so. Some of the initial mentions of Chianti wine, in 1398, reported that Chianti was a locally produced white wine. In the 1970s, the percentage of white grapes used in the production of Chianti wine dropped significantly.

Currently, there are seven Chianti zones: Chianti Classico, Chianti Montalbano, Chianti Collo Fiorentini, Chianti Rufini, Colli Sensei, Colli Pisne and Colli Aretini. Chianti wine has flavors and notes of cherry, strawberry, plum, almonds, vanilla, spice, tobacco and coffee. Made from primarily Sangiovese grapes, Chianti wine is a decadent delight. The benefits of Chianti do not stop with it’s taste. Keep reading to learn some of the interesting health and beauty benefits of Chianti wine.

Body

Red wines, such as Chianti, contain polyphenol. Polyphenol helps to strengthen your gums and teeth as you sip your glass of wine. Additionally, reservatrol is an ingredient found in red wine that is currently being studied for it’s long-term health benefits. Reservatrol is thought to reduce cancer growth and to aid the body by stimulating the release of insulin.

Skin

Red wines such as Chianti contain a number of ingredients that have skincare benefits. The reservatrol found in Chianti wine helps slow the growth of bacteria. Alpha hydroxy acids are also found in red wines, like Chianti, and these are very beneficial to your skin. AHAs are both a natural antiseptic and and anti-inflammatory. Some enthusiasts of Chianti and red wine suggest applying a bit to the face as a mask to help fight acne, clean out pores and help prevent future breakouts. Antioxidants in red wines, such as flavanoids and tannins, fight free radicals in the atmosphere. These antioxidants help stimulate the production of collagen, which gives a boost to sagging skin as it smooths out fine lines. Also found in red wines are an abundance of amino acids. Amino acids benefit your skin by forming a barrier to the skin that helps to reduce the damage done to your skin by harmful UV rays.

Hair

Once again reservatrol is responsible for a health and beauty benefit of Chianti wine, this time it it is your tresses that reap the rewards. Reservatrol fights inflammation and cell death, which means that hair loss is reduced. Drinking Chitanti wine stimulates circulation, which strengthens the blood vessels of the scalp and reduces dandruff and flakiness of the scalp.

Chianti is a complex, luxurious tasting wine hailing from the Chianti region Italy. Consumed in moderation, it produces a number of health and beauty benefits that range from slowing the growth of cancer cells to keeping your hair on your head. Most experts agree that ½ to 1 glass of red wine daily is sufficient to provide health benefits without being damaging to your body.

Resveratrol molecule structure

Resveralife Reports: Stable Delivery System for Resveratrol Discovered

Resveratrol, an extremely popular polyphenol and highly effective antioxidant, has become immensely popular in the world of skin care. This ingredient already boasts of all sorts of studies that confirm the various benefits it has to offer and new benefits offered by the compound are being discovered with every passing year. Resveratrol is the ingredient that has been associated with the “French Paradox Theory” and it is usually derived from the skin of red grapes or from a plant known as Japanese Knotsweed. Resveralife  decided to formulate its entire line of luxury skin care products around this miracle ingredient to help customers enjoy the very best of anti-aging and skin care.

Interest for Resveratrol exploded around the year 2003, when it was discovered that Resveratrol actually managed to increase the lifespan of yeast cells. This research once again ignited all those hopes and dreams of youthful looks and eternal beauty and experts began to compare it with the elusive Fountain of Youth. Over the years, other studies confirmed that Resveratrol also offered other benefits to the human body. The ingredient was reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-diabetes properties and it is also known to offer cardiovascular benefits and protection against the Alzheimer’s disease.

Vine Vera was delighted to discover that scientists have recently discovered a more stable method for delivering Resveratrol. A group of researchers from the University of Massachusetts found out that extracts and oil from grape seeds, both of which are by-products of the wine industry, can be used to create stable nanoemulsions that can easily deliver Resveratrol and also protect the ingredient in food applications. The researchers reported that these nanoemulsions remained stable when they were stored at different temperatures, and that they also protected the Resveratrol from degradation and UV-light isomerisation.

The study was published in the Food Chemistry Journal, Volume 167 and it was authored by D.J. McClements and G. Davidov-Pardo. The researchers used orange oil (indigestible) and grape seed oil (digestible) to produce the nanoemulsion-based delivery system for Resveratrol. They discovered that the optimal combination of grape seed oil and orange oil was 1:1, which allowed the formation of droplets that have an average diameter of 100nm. They further confirmed that a maximum of 120 micrograms/ milliliter of Resveratrol dosage could be added to these delivery mechanisms.

According to the authors of the study, the results have shown that the nanoemulsions formed using spontaneous emulsifications can easily be used to encapsulate Resveratrol as a nutraceutical ingredient by combining wine industry by-products like grape skin extracts and grape seed oils. The authors believe that these nanoemulsions can prove to be extremely effective in creating delivery systems for Resveratrol in beverage and functional food products.

Reports suggest that the results of this study further verified that encapsulating Resveratrol helped in increasing the ingredient’s chemical stability after being exposed to UV-light. The nanoemulsions managed 88% retention as compared to the 50% retention seen in DMSO (dimethylsulphoxide) techniques used today.

The Resveralife Life Well Guide: Boost Your Workout

Haven’t you gone for a workout with the intention of putting in a lot of effort, only to feel exhausted within the first 15 minutes? Anyone who has ever gone to a workout class has been there and it can be really depressing. The simplest way to enjoy your exercise and ensure that it doesn’t feel like a chore is to improve your endurance levels. This Resveralife Live Well Guide helps you to learn how to build up your endurance levels with the help of 5 simple exercises that can be combined to create a circuit-training routine to boost your strength, speed and stamina. To follow this routine, you need to perform one set of all 5 exercises without any breaks, rest for about 30 seconds and repeat the process two more times. You might feel tired and jaded when you start off with this routine, but as time progresses, you should be able to fly through the circuit. And once this circuit becomes easy, your workout classes will be simpler and more enjoyable.

Exercise # 1 – Knee Tuck

This exercise always starts from the top-of-a-plank position. Your hands should be wider than shoulder width and you need to keep your arms straight. The next step is to perform a single pushup by placing your toes on a glider. You can use a paper plate or a washcloth for the glider. The next step is to pull your knees towards the chest and hold the posture when the knees are about 3 inches in front of the hips. Before doing this, don’t forget to ensure that you place your weight in the balls of your feet. Hold the posture for a second and allow your legs slide back to the top-of-a-plank position. Repeat the entire set for about 30 seconds.

Exercise # 2 – Frog Jump

This exercise always starts in a squat position or a sumo position. Bring your palms next to each other in front of the chest, turn your toes outwards at a 45 degree angle, put your feet wider than hip-width and ensure that your quads are parallel to the floor. Jump up and land back in the sumo-squat position. Repeat the jump, only to land back a few inches. Continue jumping backwards and forwards for about 30 seconds.

Exercise # 3 – Crouching Push Ups

This exercise always starts in a push-up position. Place your hands wider than shoulder width, lower the chest towards the floor, bend the knees and press back to bring the knees right under your hips. Lift the hips to straighten the legs and round the spine so as to articulate each vertebra. Once this is done, move back into your starting position. Repeat the entire process for about 30 seconds.

Exercise # 4 – Squat Jumps

This exercise always starts in a squat position. Place your knees in line with your ankles and allow your butt to sink back. The posture should be as if you are just about to sit down in a chair. Clasp the hands in front of your chest and jump. Land with your right leg in front in a lunge position. Repeat the jump and land in a squat position. Repeat the jump and land with your left leg in front in a lunge position. Keep repeating the entire set for about 30 seconds.

Exercise # 5 – The Bridge Exercise

This exercise always starts by lying on your back with the knees bent and the feet placed on gliders. You can use paper plates or washcloths for the glider. Place your weight in your heels, straighten your arms by your sides with the palms facing downwards and lift your hips so that your body resembles a bridge. While the hips are lifted, push the gliders until your legs almost become straight and then pull back your heels to come back to the starting position. Repeat this entire set 20 times.

Live Well: Get In Shape Without Leaving Home

If you want to get fitter and are totally against joining a health club because of the distance, the time taken or the cost factor, you don’t need to fret. No one ever said that it is not possible to get fit without going to a gym. After all, people were fit long before these things were invented. You wouldn’t believe it, but you can easily stay fit without having to leave the house.  All you need to understand is that consistency and the fact that you actually do something on a regular basis is the key to staying fit. There are a number of inexpensive things like dumbbells, fit balls, exercise bands and push-up bars that you can use to stay fit at home. But, you should be able to do so even if you don’t have any of these props or machines. Resveralife  discovered that all you need to stay fit is to understand the five basic elements of fitness – warm up, cardiovascular workout, resistance exercises, flexibility moves and cool downs.

All you need for a warm up is a treadmill or an easy walk. For the cardiovascular routine, you can do brisk walking or step aerobics or use a jump rope. The resistance portion is as simple as abdominal crunches, weight bars, squats, small dumbbells, push ups, tubing or bands. You need to increase your body flexibility with things like yoga poses and floor stretches. And the cool down always needs to be similar to the warm up. It is possible to do the strength work and the aerobic work in the same workout, but you need to ensure that you warm up your body and cool it down every time you exercise.

If you’re pressed for time on particular days, all you have to do is to increase the intensity of your fitness routine. For example, instead of the usual 40 minute exercise routine, you can opt for a harder 25 minute routine. You can also step up the pace of your strength workouts by doing compound exercises, exercises that work on multiple muscle groups at the same time.

Getting started with at-home exercises

If you’re a beginner, try to aim for about 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise at least 3 times a week. Add 20 – 30 minutes of strength work at least 3 times every week into this equation. This should be more than enough to start off with. Irrespective of your exercise routine or the type of exercise you do, make sure that you start off slowly and increase the intensity and the time gradually. And, always listen to your body. Try to focus on the muscles that need more attention and determine if you feel it there. Working out at home has its obvious advantages, but there are a few obstacles as well. One of the main obstacles of working out at home is those frequent distractions that can derail your routines. Therefore, it always helps to exercise early in the morning because these routines are more likely to stick.

Tips for people who exercise at home

  • Try to make things interesting so that you don’t end up getting bored of your routine. Use pictures or videos as a guide for your form and technique.
  • Find a partner to exercise with. You are more likely to continue with your workout routines if you have someone to exercise with.
  • Have a fixed time for your workouts and put it on your daily schedule.
  • Set specific goals that are not too difficult, and not too easy either. They should be things that are within reach, but cannot be achieved immediately.
  • Finally, make exercise an integral part of your life. You need to look at exercise as a lifestyle change, a change that needs to become a constant in your everyday life.

Resveralife Reviews Resolutions Your Health Experts Want You to Make

Were you among the first ones to break your New Year’s resolutions in the year 2014? Have you ever kept a resolution and enjoyed the delight of actually managing to keep one? Irrespective of which side of the spectrum you fall in, you’re bound to like this list of resolutions that your health experts want you to make this year. Vine Vera hopes that these resolutions will help you to enjoy a fitter and healthier 2015.

Splurge on something wonderful using the money you saved from quitting smoking

Anyone who has recently quit smoking or plans to quit smoking should splurge the money saved by gifting themselves something wonderful. Smoking causes all sorts of damage to the body and the skin and it also leads to issues like cancer. If there is one resolution that you should make, it should be to stop smoking. However, quitting smoking has been never likely to stand as a resolution. So you need to find a reason that is good enough to make you quit smoking fast. For some extra motivation, you can always decide on the item that you wish to splurge on beforehand.

Eating more of the right food

Eating more is an extremely popular resolution among so many people. For example, many people resolve to eat more probiotic food in order to cut down on the cravings. There are those who also crave to add some more guilty pleasures into their diets. Ultimately, the right resolution this year would be to eat more of the right food. This doesn’t mean that you need to stop eating those delicious meats or exquisite desserts, it simply means that you need to reduce their intensity.

Taking steps to actually lose weight

Instead of contemplating what to do in order to lose weight, you actually need to start focusing on losing weight by taking the right steps. Little things like taking 200 extra steps on a daily basis can make a world of difference. Try to schedule breaks for strolling or walk to your coworker’s desk to deliver a message instead of sending an email. Remember, the secret isn’t in dedicating 30 minutes each day to exercise. The secret to losing weight is to become more active. Your ultimate goal should always be on achieving a healthier lifestyle, not losing weight. As your lifestyle becomes healthier, weight loss is bound to happen.

Regulate your sleeping pattern

It makes sense to sleep earlier than usual in order to enjoy 8 hours of sleep every night. If 8 hours of sleep is simply not possible, just try and go to sleep 15 minutes earlier than usual and keep shifting the time month by month. So instead of going to bed at 10 while your body is used to sleeping at midnight, it makes sense to reduce it by 15 minutes at a go. If you keep doing this every month, eventually you should be able to go to sleep by 10.

De-clutter your mind

If you suffer from a lot of stress, this tip is particularly important for you. Instead of trying to be more organized in the year 2015, try to do different things like meditating once every day. When you’re depressed, stressed or anxious, your mind often ends up getting cluttered. Meditation shall help you to de-clutter your mind, thereby releasing your stress and anxiety. In fact, a study conducted that was published in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal actually showed that 30 minutes of meditation on a daily basis actually helped to reduce anxiety and depression within 8 weeks.

Happy young woman exercising in winter

Resveralife Live Well Guide: Safe Exercise Tips for the Winter Months

The benefits of exercising during the winter months go well beyond being beneficial for your skin. Exercising during the winters can also prove to be extremely satisfying and it can go a long way in helping you improve your mood, particularly when you exercise in the mornings. However, exercising in the cold winter months can also be quite risky. This Resveralife Live Well Guide from Vine Vera examines some of the best tips to follow while exercising during the winter months.

Warm up your body before going outdoors

It is very important to start off with your warm-ups while you’re still indoors. Allow the body a chance to be able to ease into the workout routine. To do so, all you need to do is warm up for a few minutes while you’re still indoors. Once you’re outside, take a 30 second break in every few minutes for the first 10 minutes to allow your body to be able to adjust to the chilly conditions.

Cool down over a period of time

Cooling down the right way is as important as a proper warm up. You need to start cooling down over three to four minutes before the end of your routine by slowly easing up on the pressure. Once you get back indoors, remove a few layers of your clothing and make sure that you’re active for another 5 – 10 minutes to allow your body to cool down properly. If you end up experiencing some muscle soreness, apply a pain relieving gel on the problem area.

Dress properly

Don’t forget to layer up properly before venturing outdoors. You might want to wear layers that can be removed once you complete your warm ups in order to avoid any sort of discomfort. The ideal way to do so is to start off with a thin layer of synthetic materials like polypropylene to ensure that the sweat stays away from your body. The next layer should always be an insulator layer like wool or fleece and the topmost layer should be waterproof with a breathable shell. It is also important to cover up your hands, ears, neck, head and feet, depending on the conditions outside. These body parts are the ones that are most affected by the cold. Don’t forget to add reflective panels on your clothing if it’s still dark outside.

Take proper care of your feet

Making sure that you keep your feet warm and dry is very important for ensuring that you don’t end up with blisters. Wear sports socks which help you to draw away perspiration from your skin and use shoes that have a decent tread.

Don’t ignore the importance of weather reports

Don’t forget to check the weather report before heading out. Things like pelting rain and biting winds won’t do you any favors. It is essential to be flexible with your workout timings during the winter months. And if things look really bad, take a rain check on your exercise.

Chalk out your route

Have a pre-fixed route in mind and don’t forget to keep to well lit areas when it’s dark or damp. Try to perform loops around your neighborhood and repeat them. You can also head over to the local park, provided that it is well lit.  Make sure that someone is aware of your route, in case something goes south.

Don’t ease up on your hydration

Just because you’re sweating less during the winters doesn’t mean that you need less water. Don’t ease up on your water intake and stick to a minimum of 10 – 12 glasses of water each day. Try drinking water before, during and after your workouts. Force yourself to a glass of water if you don’t feel thirsty.
